Justice We Pursue

Award Winners!

At Day on the Hill this year, we conferred two awards, the Lawrence D. Gibson Award for Social Justice and the Key Advocate of the Year Award. Our recipients have been active JRLC and iCAN volunteers for many years, and dedicated faithful citizens. Thank you again to Terry Schoonover, our Gibson Award winner, and Jevne Kloeber, our Key Advocate of the Year!

Terry Schoonover has been a JRLC district leader and ally for social justice for many years. He is a graduate of the Just Faith program in the Diocese of Winona and a member of the Pax Christi parish in Rochester.

Terry has been instrumental in bringing JRLC’s voice to District 30 legislators and has organized several in-district meetings on social justice issues, including health care for the poor, public assistance for the needy, and a fair, impartial judiciary for all residents of our state. Some prophets were first reluctant to speak but we look upon Terry as a willing prophetic voice in Rochester and his leadership ripples throughout the state. What keeps Terry going? Probably, Just Faith!

Jevne Terry Schoonover

As a member of Presbyterian Church of the Apostles in Burnsville, Jevne Kloeber has been a dedicated leader, bringing advocacy and public education into her faith community. As a faithful citizen, she was elected to her local school board, and has served her community and congregation well, addressing a myriad of challenges facing Minnesota children. Jevne has led iCAN activities in her congregation, including the Children’s Sabbath and the April Campaign to End Child Abuse.

Beyond carrying out the responsibilities of an iCAN Key Advocate, Jevne has been particularly active in her community addressing human trafficking, working with several organizations to convene a powerful community forum in Burnsville just this past February. Because Jevne was is in Washington DC lobbying on national peace and justice issues on the day of the event, her friend Avis Tilden accepted the award in her honor and conveyed Jevne’s gratitude for the recognition.

At JRLC and iCAN, we depend on our amazing volunteers to carry our work across the state and do their part in supporting the common good. Thank you to Terry and Jevene, and everyone else who participated in Day on the Hill!
