Justice We Pursue

Reflections on Dialogue

I am heading into my last week as an intern here at JRLC, which has prompted me to reflect on my time here. Coming into JRLC, I didn’t have any idea what to expect. But over the past few months I have been given a chance to learn about JRLC, and to appreciate the uniqueness of what is done here.

True interfaith dialogue is a rare thing in the world. To find evidence for this, one need not look further than the recent furor over the construction of a mosque and community center two blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks. This sort of stereotyping, intolerance, and ignorance highlights the importance of creating ties between and among faith groups. The Twin Cities has one of the stronger interfaith communities in the nation, thanks in large part to groups like JRLC.

But what truly makes JRLC unique is that it moves beyond dialogue into action. It advocates important legislative issues, and provides a strong, unified, and moral voice for our lawmakers. I had the opportunity to sit in on a board meeting for JRLC, which gave me an inside glimpse into the work that goes son behind the scenes here. It was truly incredible to see people of different religious backgrounds, all brought together by a sense of justice informed by faith. It is true that the member groups of JRLC may not see eye to eye on every issue, but the ability to transcend differences to find common ground is what gives JRLC strength. Lawmakers listen when JRLC speaks; they know that we have a broad faith-based coalition that stands behind us.

In a world where religious differences lead to hatred, fear, and war, it is refreshing to see people of faith coming together for the cause of justice. While we may take it for granted because we are used to it, JRLC is a truly unique institution. There are no other groups quite like it. All faith groups can be grateful for what JRLC was, is, and will continue to be: a blessing for the state of Minnesota.
